[Please realize this is an early version of later scenes from a book I'm working on]
The fog was supernaturally thick. Kaylith was on early morning patrol standing along the ship’s rail close to the main mast and couldn’t even see the watch lanterns at the fore or aft, he could only make out the halo reflected through the fog. Even the halos were getting hard to see as the morning sun had started to light up the fog. He was about to move on when he heard a scream and several thunks coming from the forecastle, then the watch lantern disappeared. Kaylith lunged toward the alarm bell and swung the rope back and forth to get the clapper to bang against the bell and yelled, “Watch at the fore is down!” The aft watch repeated the alert with the aft bell.
There was a lurch to the right, but no sound. Kaylith realized they had silenced the front of their ship as he continued clanging the alarm bell. He saw the enemy ship emerge from the fog as he heard others finally reaching the deck. As others arrayed themselves on the deck to repel any boarding attempts, Kaylith let go of the rope and readied himself. Now they could hear the scraping of wood on wood as the silence was dropped. A priest nearby blessed the crew as arrows flew blindly between the ships as the mid-decks slid closer. Grapples flew over from the other ship as casters started adding spells to the missiles flying back and forth. Kaylith included his magic darts as soon as he saw an enemy they could reach.
Men and other beings jumped across from the attacking ship, the sailors attempted to repel, and swords clashed. Kaylith thought he was sleepy for a moment, but shook it off while several other men around him collapsed in sleep around him. He stepped forward trying to fill a hole where men now lay sleeping. Again he had a thought of sleep, but shook it off as still others collapsed asleep. The remaining crew drew back trying to prevent getting flanked. Swords still clashed even with fewer sailors, but at last, Kaylith had a thought of sleep and collapsed to the deck asleep.

Someone was running down the cross tunnel yelling and as he passed their cave they could hear, “under attack! Head for the surface!”
There was a muffled boom from somewhere far away. Small bits of dirt fell from the ceiling. The guards turned to see what the commotion was all about. Kaylith and the halfling didn’t wait. Kaylith swung his pickaxe at the guard and stuck it in his head, the halfling wasn’t as lucky and barely smacked his guard. Kaylith swiftly pulled sword and dagger from the guard’s sheaths as he fell and launched the dagger at the guard who was turning back around to see what was happening. Lucky for the guard he’d drawn his sword as he turned about and accidentally battered the dagger out of the way. The halfling was trying to rotate around to the guard’s right as he took another swing with his pickaxe.
Kaylith made haste to help the halfling, yelling and threatening the guard’s other side with the longer blade he’d taken from the guard he had already downed. The shout brought the guard’s attention around to Kaylith and brought his blade up to block Kaylith’s strike. Attention taken away from the halfling let him strike with ease and he was finally able to plant his pickaxe squarely in the guard’s back. Kaylith landed a firm blow upon the guard as well, finally bringing him down.
“Grab the belt”, stated the halfling as he nimbly pulled the guard’s belt off and fastened it around his waist. Kaylith went back to his guard to take the belt and wrapped it around his own waist. By the time he was done the halfling handed Kaylith the dagger he’d thrown. “Thanks for the distraction.”
Kaylith retorted, “distraction was the key to all of this. Come! Let us find what this disturbance is about.” Kaylith and the halfling started to head for the tunnel.
Four of the other “servants” peeled themselves out of the darkness. Kaylith recognized them all, several sailors - Tam, Jorn, Demos - and the priest that had taken passage on the ship. All of them had shovels or pickaxe in hand. “We’re with you,” Tam said.
“Fine, but stay a bit behind us to lessen the noise you make!” the halfling shot back at them.
Kaylith led, his eyes better to see in the darkness, both sword and dagger in hand. The quiet halfling a few steps behind, the sword looking a little long in his hands. Out into the tunnel they went, heading back towards the surface. They snuck past a cross tunnel that led to other caves where they could hear the clinking of pickaxes against stone. Soon they reached the bend where the tunnel folded back upon itself heading even farther up. The four others closely followed, but not far enough as a guard, apparently immune to the surface summons, stepped out of his post to see what the commotion in the tunnel was.
Seeing the miners escaping he gave a shout and charged the group. Kaylith parried with his dagger and slashed with his sword. Kaylith noticed a shadow pass as he struck again with his sword. He parried again with dagger and struck with his sword. The guard gave a grunt and then slumped to the ground with the halfling appearing behind him. They made sure he was dead and then passed his sword belt back to those behind. The priest, apparently preferring his shovel, passed it back to Tam who passed it to Demos. Demos fastened the belt around his waist and drew the sword as softly as he could.
They continued up the tunnel, eventually hearing muffled noises from far away. Kaylith continued to lead upward in the dark tunnels. As they headed up the tunnels it became clear that there was fighting ahead. There was also danger behind as the priest loudly whispered, “Behind!” and pointed past the others behind him. Demos turned around gazing into the dimness behind them not seeing or hearing the danger yet. The priest quickly whispered while flexing his hand and fingers. A few slight objects flew from the priest’s hand, past Demos, and slammed into something slightly beyond exploding into a bright sparkling light. As the guard fell all of his flammables burst into flame. The light displayed two more guards beyond him.
Kaylith had started towards the rear as soon as the warning had been given. He rushed past the priest attempting to help defend the rear. Demos, now seeing the danger, also charged towards the guards and the other two sailors' mouths dropped. The halfling stayed in Kaylith’s shadow. After a stunned moment, the priest followed after.
Kaylith noticed Demos parry the first blow from the guard he was facing, but then he too became busy with his own guard. After a few jabs Demos slumped and fell. A shovel blade appeared shortly after landing atop the guard’s head causing him to slump as well. Kaylith quickly finished his guard off and checked the tunnel beyond. Kaylith assumed, “I’m guessing these guards were farther down, sent up by that runner.”
“Makes sense,” replied the halfling.
“Hey, priest, is there anything you can do for Demos?” Kaylith asked.
The priest, having been checking Demos’ wounds, turned to look up at them. “The name is Valec. Unfortunately that was my last spell after the battle on the ship and I’ve not been able to pray or memorize anything since. Demos is too far gone for anything else I can do. We had been talking about how to get out so thanks for removing the guards. I recognized both him and you as sailors from the ship, but I don’t know your name.”
“Kaylith.”
The two looked over at the halfling noticing he was finishing picking the guards clean. He looked up at the silence and noticed them looking at him. “What? They’re not gonna need it and we might in order to get out of here.”
There was another boom farther ahead which was much louder than the last one and reminded them they needed to start moving again. The halfling split up the swords, daggers, and belts between them having kept a smaller sword for himself. The halfling quickly swapped his belt with the longer sword for the belt with the shorter sword, transferred the jingling pouch to his new belt, and handed his previous belt to Tam. Tam and Jorn put their new belts on and drew their new swords. Kaylith sheathed his dragger, tossed the second belt over his shoulder, and drew the sword from under his armpit. Valec tossed the belt he had over his shoulder, holding onto it with his free hand, and picked up his shovel.
Kaylith moved to take the lead again and continued following the tunnel up towards the surface. The sound of fighting above became more obvious. No more guards stumbled out of the darkness as they made their way upwards. The noise grew louder every level they went up. Eventually, as he was about to round a corner, Kaylith raised his hand for everyone to stop. He whispered back to them, “stay here, there are well armed elves ahead. Let me deal with this.”
